Packing for a six-month cruise ship contract can be daunting. You need to be practical, efficient, and prepared for various climates and social situations. Here are the essentials:
**1. Documents:** This is non-negotiable. Keep your passport, visa, employment contract, medical certificates, and any other official papers in a secure, waterproof folder.
**2. Uniform and Work Shoes:** The company will provide most of your uniform, but you’ll likely need to bring your own comfortable, non-slip black shoes. Break them in before you join!
**3. Casual Clothes:** Pack for different climates. You might be in the Caribbean one week and Alaska the next. Layers are your best friend. Also, bring something a bit smarter for crew events or evenings out in port.
**4. Electronics:** A universal travel adapter is a lifesaver. Bring your laptop, phone, and an external hard drive loaded with movies and TV shows for your downtime. Ship internet can be slow and expensive.
**5. Personal Items:** While you can buy toiletries onboard or in port, it’s a good idea to bring your favorite brands from home to get you started. Also, pack any prescription medication you need for the entire duration of your contract, along with a doctor’s note.
**6. Comforts from Home:** A few photos, your favorite tea, or a special blanket can make your small cabin feel more like home and help with homesickness.
